Programme for development and promotion of environmental forest services market in the tropical forests of Guatemala

Guatemala

This pre-project relates to the implementation of actions aimed at strengthening national efforts to value environmental services derived from forests. As in other Latin American countries, the development of Guatemala's market in this area is limited; therefore, it is proposed to carry out studies that may identify the service lines that offer the greatest potential for the country, so they may be developed and a mechanism may be designed to be used as national policy.

Specific Objectives

  • to identify the environmental services provided by major forest ecosystems in Guatemala, and the possibility, potential and relevance of developing the market.
  • to define basic guidelines for the promotion and regulation of compensation for environmental services generated by forest ecosystems.

Progress report

November 2008

The final completion and audit reports for the pre-project have been submitted and approved by the Secretariat. In November 2008, the pre-project was declared as completed by the Committee on Forest Industrie.

November 2007

The Secretariat had disbursed the funds to the implementing agency after receiving the work plan in September 2005. However, the new law in Guatemala forbidding government agencies from administering international funds has affected the commencement of pre-project activities. It was subsequently established that the law does not apply to the pre-project as the fund was transferred to INAB in 2005. Accordingly, the implementation of the pre-project activities had begun in August 2006. Project delays were experienced due to the re-scheduling of activities and changes to proposed consultants. Project activities were expected to be completed in June 2007, but ITTO has not yet received the final report and financial statement from the implementing agency.
