Management of the Kayan Mentarang National Park
(KMNP) to promote transboundary conservation between Indonesia and Malaysian
states of Sabah and Sarawak (Phase 1)

This proposal bas been developed after long process of brainstorming
and intensive discussion with various stakeholders in all levels to get consensus
and ensure that they will benefit as well as participate in all stages of the
project's life. On the basis of the findings and recommendations from Phase
I and in line with the Indonesian Government's goal on sustainable forest management,
the objectives of phase Jl is to continue the development of a strategy of Trans-boundary
Conservation (TBC) across the border with Malaysia States of Sabah and Sarawak,
through strengthening the collaborativemanagement of Kayan Mentarang National
Park and following up the initiation of process for cooperation betweenIndonesia
and Malaysia.
The project activities will be implemented over two years and will focus on
several outputs, in terms of strengthening KMNP Parkmanagement including the
improvement of resource capacity in managing K W , operationall Work plan formulation
and developing and implementation of community-based sustainable economic activities
mainly in the border area. As regards to trans-boundary outputs across the border
between Indonesia-Malaysia, mutual understanding between Indonesia and Malaysia
on theTBC concept will be developed, by ajoint task forcerepresentingrelated
stakeholders fromIndonesia and Malaysia. a joint ground programlactivities for
cooperation in conservation and management of the Trans Boundary KMNP and PTNP
(Pulang Tau National Park) will be developed.
