Intensification of Teak Forestry

Côte d'Ivoire

The project aims at strengthening SODEFOR's capacity to restore parts of the degraded forest through intensifying forestry plantations.
The specific objectives are:

  1. to modernize forestry and to attempt to reverse the existing production ratio to be in favor of industrial timber;
  2. to establish new plots from remaining old stumps after clear felling trough appropriate silvicultural practices.

  • Les parcelles actuelles;
  • Les parcelles après une coupe rase.

Progress report

November 2008

The Delegation of Cote d'Ivoire informed that most project activities have been completed and the project final technical report and completion report were to be finalized and submitted to the ITTO Secretariat shortly. The Committee took note of that information and asked the Executing Agency to submit those reports as soon as possible in order to allow the Secretariat to report this project as completed during the next Committee Session.

December 2007

In accordance with the project’s most recent reports submitted to ITTO in February and August 2007 and the Fifth Project Technical Committee meeting held in May 2007, progress in project implementation can be summarized as follows:

  • A second training of Project technicians has been conducted by qualified professionals from the National Agriculture Research Centre of Cote d’Ivoire on silvicultural treatments useful for the implementation of this project;
  • 78 plots had been established within selected teak plantations in order to undertake various silvicultural treatments;
  • All plots established within teak plantations were monitored to collect data on girth, height and shape of stems for each tree;
  • The maintenance of plots has been undertaken before in order to facilitate the work of collecting data;
  • The inventory for selection of best suckers thrown out and the determination of adequate post-harvesting methods have been undertaken in 36 plots within teak plantations; and
  • The statistical analysis of inventory data is in progress.
